Mayo clinic diet

As a high fat, low carb diet, the mayo clinic diet is not associated in any way other than by name to the well known Mayo Clinic Health Centre and hospital located in Minnesota, USA.

In fact the medical institution is quick to dismiss the mayo clinic diet and many other similar weight loss programmes.

The regime is on offer in several varieties although the most common concept seems to be regarding the fat burning capabilities of grapefruit. The mayo clinic diet permits as much grapefruit, meat and high fat foods as is desired but very little besides.Include poultry and fish in unlimited amounts and just a few vegetables.

The central theme of each version is the eating of high fat and high cholesterol foods. Everything with sugars and starches is omitted from the mayo clinic diet and the amount of caffeine that you can have is also strictly controlled. Any of the different varieties of the plan usually promise that you can lose up to 52lbs in just two months. The programme is most often three or seven days in length.

The actual amount of food that you can consume whilst on this plan is not restricted. Also on the plus side is that the foods available are filling and tasty and include any type of meat, poultry and fish and offers variety to cater most people.

Despite the hype and the ludicrous claims, grapefruits do not possess fat burning qualities. The regime encourages you to eat high fat content foods and this includes foods which have been proven to be connected to the development of heart disease. the limitation of carbohydrates can cause fatigue. There is also a lack of essential vitamins and minerals which can lead to deficiency diseases such as anaemia.

Our opinion:

It's an urban myth. No really! This is actually a fad or crash diet and has no connection with the famous Mayo Clinic in the USA
