Sources Of Food

We are all advised to eat a balanced diet but what does that mean? Here we examine the different food groups, what you should be eating and what you should avoid.

Just what do you know about your food nutrition? Whether it's fast foods, pre-packaged and processed foods, organic foods or just fresh vegetables, healthy eating is as much about the food nutrition as it is about the amount or type of eating pattern that you have.

There is a vast selection of foods as well as the source, that you can choose from and so it is extremely important therefore that you understand the types of foods on offer. It's all about ensuring the balance involves as much fresh vegetables and fruit and as little processed salty food as possible. This way you can ensure you get as many essential vitamins and minerals as your body requires. It is essential therefore to ensure the food nutrition component comes in tandem with good practices in terms of your eating and exercise habits every day not just the odd day during the week.

Processed Foods

Pre-packaged foods and processed foods are usually high in calories and have a high salt content making them unsuitable for people counting calories in an attempt to lose weight or suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure).

Of course increasingly you can now find processed foods that have little or no salt or are low in calories but they are still not as good as freshly sourced and cooked fruit and vegetables. Food nutrition may also be dependent on location in some cases. For example, those near a farm but out in the country may be forced to buy directly from the farmers out of convenience. Similarly, if you live near a supermarket, you have more opportunities to take the easy option and stock up on the processed sauces, ready made meals and high calorie foods.

How To Achieve Balance

If you want to ensure that you get the right balance of vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates, as well as fibre, salt and sugar, you might have to consider visiting numerous shops such as green grocers and even buying online. Genetically Modified, organic food, even frozen foods, there are plenty of great options for you to find whatever type of food youre after. Find traditional local cuisines from all around the world now and start incorporating them into delicious meals to help you maintain a balanced, healthy diet.

Fast foods should definitely be avoided if you want to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Weight gain through high calorie consumption can be the result of too many takeaways, fast food meals and processed foods. Fresh fruit and vegetables along with lean meat, fish and starch are much healthier alternatives that, when combined with regular physical activity, can help you to lose weight and gain weight control.

Read Food Labels

If youre unsure of the fat or salt content of what you're eating, the label will contain all the information you need. It is a good idea to read the label thoroughly and determine whether or not the food you're eating is healthy for you.
