Processed foods

Some processed foods and packaged products are prepared with a lot of salt. Sodium and salt are different things but essentially they affect us in similar ways. Table salt or sodium chloride actually contains sodium. Sodium is naturally occurring and appears in almost all foods and liquids that we consume. It is advisable that you avoid consuming too many processed foods which can help you to reduce the amount of salt in your diet. Too much salt in your diet, especially through eating too many processed foods can lead to arterial damage and this can cause heart disease to develop which can result in heart attacks and strokes.

A good idea to reduce salt intake is to remove any salt from the table whilst eating meals and to not place any additional quantities of salt into your food during cooking. Processed foods and packaged products that you should try to avoid include fast foods and cured meat items. Also, avoid dried soups, tinned products, and soy sauce.

The government guidelines on salt intake suggest that we should avoid consuming any more than 6g per day. This can prove to be difficult as there are so many products with hidden quantities of salt and almost everything we eat has some in it. As you decrease your salt intake, you'll find that your desire for salty foods also becomes more and more diminished. Herbs and spices are much more desirable as replacements for salt in foods.

Refined foods are usually high in salt but also in sugar and fat. Sugar and fat can be detrimental to your health so these types of food should also be reduced in your diet. Limiting such items will make you look and feel much better in as little as two weeks. If you have a particularly high salt, sugar and fat diet, you may want to consider the benefits of going on a detox diet as this can help your body to remove toxins and repair any cellular damage caused by eating a poor diet.
